Our Story
When COVID-19 hit, we quickly found ourselves collecting unemployment, and with the price of rent here in San Francisco being no joke, we had to figure out a game plan…..FAST.
So, we started a bakery!
It started off small, just baking a few loaves of sourdough for the neighbors. As word spread about our story and goodies, the community adopted us and started pouring in their support.
New to the San Francisco sourdough scene, our country loaves are well baked, crusty, moist inside, and subtly sour — and within just a few days, Bernal Bakery was up to its neck in orders. Over the last few years, we expanded our range to include soft and gooey brown butter chocolate chip cookies, sweet & savory pastries + croissants, jams & granolas, and a good variety of loaves.
Fast forward and we now have our own brick + mortar on Cortland Ave. and our baked goodies + bread can be found at cafés, restaurants, and shops around the city. We do a good handful of farmers markets and pop-ups, and are so proud of the team we have today. We can’t thank you all enough for your constant support — see you out there!
Covid-19 undoubtedly affected such a large number of us and we (Ryan & Daniella) were no different.
After watching our restaurant capacity drop to almost nothing we were forced to hang up our aprons and collect unemployment.
As all San Franciscans know, the rent here is no joke. We had to figure out a game plan fast;
We started a bakery.
It started off small, just baking a few loafs of sourdough for the neighbors. As word spread about our story and goods the community almost instantly adopted us and started pouring in their support.
Within just a few days Bernal Bakery was up to its neck in orders!
We expanded our menu to offer sourdough cinnamon rolls, brown butter chocolate chip cookies and a seasonal crumb cake.
We pushed our little kitchen to its limits and still couldn’t keep up with the demand!
From there we decided to take Bernal Bakery to the next level by applying for a business license and LLC.
Today, Bernal Bakery is operating at full speed out of a local commissary kitchen. We’ve had to say goodbye to our signature basket on Wright Street where pick-up was completely contactless thanks to our amazing “boom arm drop system” (generously welded by our amazing neighbor). But you can find us on Cortland at our new cafe Bernal Basket (521 Cortland Ave.) — can’t wait to see you there!
These days, you can find our baked goodies at our new cafe Bernal Basket, and at grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers markets around the city.
